Learning styles
Addressing the diverse needs of learners is an ever-present challenge in the teaching profession. This course will provide a solid background to the notion of learning styles. By the end of the course, students should know how to identify the characteristics of three particular learning styles and how best to accommodate these styles in the classroom, while not specifically teaching to each style (an impossibility!).
The course will be useful for:
- all teachers – in helping to understand the issues around learning styles and encouraging them to teach with learning styles in mind
- school leaders – to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to consider creating a whole-school approach to learning styles
- governors – to help in understanding the issues today’s teachers must grapple with, and to equip them with the knowledge with which to encourage the recognition of learning styles in their schools
- support staff – to increase their understanding of the significance of learning styles in the classroom
As you work your way through the course, you will:
- explore the notion of learning styles and preferences and look at your own learning preferences
- explore in detail one particular approach to learning styles, the visual, auditory and kinesthetic (VAK) model, with an emphasis on personal experience in the classroom
- study each of the VAK styles, with a view to enhancing classroom performance for pupils of each preference
