Effective recruitment
Recruiting high quality staff is at the heart of school improvement. Improved standards in teaching and learning are dependent on having the right people in place. Schools face increasing competition for teachers, both from other schools and from other professions. Managers increasingly need to develop skills in marketing and human resource management to attract, recruit and retain the best staff for their school.
The aim of the course is to develop knowledge and skills in the recruitment and selection of staff to provide the best quality teaching for pupils. It will encourage both experienced and inexperienced staff to examine the school's current approaches and practices to meet its particular needs.
It will also highlight the skills necessary to develop a medium to long-term strategy for staffing the school, based on research and analysis and allow a more measured management of the school’s most valuable resource – its teachers.
As you work your way through the course you will:
- analyse the staffing profile and needs of the school
- research the national context for teacher recruitment and models of good practice from other fields
- review school materials and documents, eg, marketing materials, job description, staffing structures
- propose new models and practices for recruitment
- develop your own understanding of the principles of successful recruitment and selection
