Developing international mindedness
The aim of this course is to provide staff in international schools with a background to key developments that have helped drive the growth of international education.
The course will be useful for everyone in international schools, who should know the origins of the phenomena they help to nurture. In particular, it will be useful for:
- school leaders, administrators and Board members
- classroom teachers
They need to understand the inherent complexity of international mindedness, and the variety of ways it can be interpreted.
The course has four modules:
- Module 1: Historical introduction
- Module 2: International mindedness – the impact of school decisions
- Module 3: The skills of international mindedness
- Module 4: International mindedness – what else is involved?
Author Biography
Meet the course author:

Malcolm Davis is a teacher and consultant with great experience in international education. He has taught International Baccalaureate courses for over 22 years in History, Theory of Knowledge, Philosophy and History of the Islamic World. As a middle-manager in a large comprehensive school in England, he introduced a History program that attempted to address the issue of racial awareness and multiculturalism, before joining Vienna International School at its time of growth and development.
More recently, he has been involved in Teacher Training programs in Eastern Europe, and has worked closely with the IBO in refining its Diploma Philosophy program. He is Deputy Chief Examiner for History of the Islamic World, and has published a number of articles on a wide variety of subjects.

Meet the course author:

After a distinguished career in adult education in universities, Caroline Ellwood moved to the international field and became Head of the Middle School of the Vienna International School. She was closely associated with the development of the IB Middle Years Programme, is familiar with the Primary Years Programme and an experienced teacher at Diploma level.
With Malcolm Davis, she helped pilot the History of the Islamic World IB Diploma Humanities option. She has a Doctorate in Education from the University of London, was BP Fellow in Education at Keble College, Oxford and has received the ECIS Award for the Promotion of International Education. She has acted as a consultant on aspects of international education and international-mindedness to schools in North and South America, Africa, Australia, Europe and the Far East. She is the editor of IS Magazine and The International Schools Journal.
